A mailing list is the electronic version of a discussion group. "Listservs", as they are called, are used extensively on the Internet for distributing newsletters and to hold discussions on just about any topic you can imagine. We have a listserv dedicated to our class that will be used throughout this semester. Students will receive e-mails from the listserv throughout the semester; most of these will be the instructor sharing an answer to a student's question, or announcing news (e.g. final grade posting). Students have found this to be very helpful, especially when exercises or projects are due.
Students must "subscribe" to the listserv. To subscribe, you must first log on to the computer and account where you want the e-mail messages delivered. For example, use your work computer if you want to see messages during the day, or select your home computer if you prefer to save class work for the evening. Send an e-mail message with no subject and containing the following text to ListProc@listproc.hcf.jhu.edu:
SUBSCRIBE 605481-McNamee <your-name>
(replace <your-name> with your name, of course). If successful, you will automatically receive a welcome e-mail message within a few minutes.
Any e-mail sent to the list is distributed to the entire class. This is called "posting" a message. To post a message to the class, address your e-mail to:
605481-McNamee@listproc.hcf.jhu.edu
Note that this address is different from the one you used to subscribe to the list.
Students are encouraged to use this list for class discussions. Example uses:
Things you should not post:
If in doubt, send your question to the instructor.
At the end of the semester, you will automatically be removed from the mailing list. If for some reason, you want to quit sooner, send an e-mail with no subject and the following message to ListProc@listproc.hcf.jhu.edu:
UNSUBSCRIBE 605481-McNamee
If you have any questions or problems, please contact the instructor/list owner:
Paul McNamee - paulmac@apl.jhu.edu
Thanks to Jeff Gustin (gustin@apl.jhu.edu) for help setting up the list.
We strongly encourage electronic posting and dissemination of material and we are sensitive to the environment and to the potential for overloading computer and printing systems. Therefore, we strongly discourage the use of university resources for printing copies of the material on these pages, particularly course notes. Please limit your printing at university sites to pages of absolute necessity. All other printing should be done using your own resources.
